The São João de Deus Institute - Telhal, in partnership with the Municipalities of Oeiras and Sintra and with the co-financing of Portugal Inovação Social/Lisboa 2030, is implementing a response that aims to provide caregivers of people with dementia with short breaks in the provision of care that can be dedicated to self-care activities and social interaction. During these caregiver breaks, the person with dementia is accompanied, in a home context, by volunteers with specific training and supervised by a specialist technician. This support for people with dementia is based on the creation of a close relationship and the realization of meaningful recreational activities and social interaction. Volunteers commit to dedicating between 1 hour and 3 hours per week to carry out a home visit. The family is selected according to the volunteer's geographical area as well as time availability. Volunteers receive specific training and are closely monitored by the volunteer manager.
